The Peak District - discover this spectacular landscape in one of the
most beautiful & inspiring parts of the UK.
The Peak District is an upland area in central and northern England, lying
mainly in northern Derbyshire, but also covering parts of Cheshire, Greater
Manchester, Staffordshire, and South and West Yorkshire.
An area of great diversity, it is conventionally split into the northern
Dark Peak, where most of the moorland is found and whose geology is gritstone,
and the southern White Peak, where most of the population lives and where
the geology is mainly limestone-based.
A popular destination is Dovedale in Derbyshire,it is owned by the National
Trust and is currently farmed with 1000's of sheep on the rocky slopes
and in the woods. It is little more than 3 miles distance between Thorpe
to the south of the dale and Milldale in the north with the famous part
being the wooded ravine between the stepping stones, a short distance
from the car park at the front of Thorpe Cloud and the cave like Dove
Holes
The Blue John Cavern in the Peak District is a series of caverns considered
to be the finest range in Great Britain.
Blue John is Britains rarest mineral first discoverd at Castleton by the
Romans almost 2000 years ago. And are the worlds only known deposits of
this extremely rare and beautiful blue stone.
During excavations at Pompeii two vases of Blue John Stone were supposedly unearthed, evidence therefore that the Romans not only discovered the stone but also appreciated it for its ornamental value
Cavern Tours are of immense educational interest showing clearly how
the caverns are formed in limestone strata and how the limestone itself
had much earlier been formed by the deposits on the floors of great oceans
which have long since receded, as the fossilised remains of marine animals
now show.
